The college application process can often feel like an uphill battle. Between managing multiple deadlines, crafting the perfect personal statement, gathering letters of recommendation, and keeping track of endless to-do lists, the stress can build up quickly. It’s no surprise that many students find themselves overwhelmed, questioning where to even begin. This week, we’re here to break down the complexities of college applications into simple, manageable steps. From setting realistic timelines to crafting a stand-out application, Redwood River Academy is here to guide you through every stage of the process.

1. Stay Organized
The first major thing that any successful applicant must do is create a clear organization system. Have a timeline of deadlines, essay requirements, and decision days. Not only this but have a good file organization system. Supplemental essays can quickly pile up – having a clear way to store and sort them will help you in the long run when referring back to already-written essays. When writing down deadlines, keep in mind that on busy nights, the Common Application website can crash! Consider submitting your applications a day or two (at least) before they are due).
2. Have Your College List Made
While last minute changes can happen, locking down your list early on is preferable. Knowing when deadlines are approaching and what your total workload is will help you plan and manage your time more effectively. When you make your list, make note of which colleges require what (test scores, recommendations letters, supplementary essays, etc.).
3. Follow Up on Letters of Recommendation
If you asked for your letters of recommendation in the Spring, check in with that teacher! Is there any more information they need from you? Are they on track to finish on time? These are important questions that you want to ask as soon as possible to avoid any last-minute scrambles. Make sure they know when your first deadline is.
4. Have an Accountability Mechanism
Whether it be your tutor, a parent, teacher, or friend, have someone to check in with! College applications and schoolwork can quickly pile up – mitigating that as best as you can is the key to success during the process.
5. Give Yourself Grace
If you’re falling behind, that is okay! Don’t be too hard on yourself – college applications are a lot to manage. Instead of getting mad at yourself or panicking, take a deep breathe, and focus on making a plan to catch up.
