How to Get Scholarships

Hey! We’ll be talking about how to find and win college merit-based scholarships. Scholarships can be valuable for students and we’re here to break them down! Different schools have different scholarships and it’s best to know when and where to look for them. Read on for some tips!

Here are general tips for finding scholarships:

  • Know your school - certain schools have specific scholarships for their school. If a college is on your apply to list, when doing your research, look around - search up “X school name merit based scholarship” for example.

    • Here is a great list of colleges with specific merit based scholarships! Be sure to note the requirements for GPA (oftentimes for the following duration of your time in college) and explore the links further!

  • Also know when to apply! Many schools will have earlier deadlines if you want to be considered for the scholarships.

    • For example, Emory University has an extensive scholar program that boasts “partial to full merit-based scholarships.” However, to be considered, you must apply by November 15 (even if applying through Regular Decision!)

  • Know whether you qualify! Lots of schools have specific scholarships - such as ones for creative writing, dance, theater etc. For example, UNC Chapel Hill has programs specifically for Creative Writing and science.

    • However, some scholarship programs, such as the general scholarship program at UNC Chapel Hill doesn’t even require an additional application - “All students who are admitted to UNC are automatically considered for these scholarships; no additional application materials are necessary.”

Tips for applying to scholarships:

Now that you have found the program and (if there’s an application needed), begun your application, how do you stand out?

  • Speak of your genuine passions - what drives you? Much like your original college application, showcase what makes you special and how you got to where you are!

  • Know your “why” - Students with scholarships may be a part of a great community that involves closer networking and faculty mentorship support.

    • For example, Emory University’s Goizueta Scholars Program gives students “guaranteed admission to the business school, have priority access to business classes, are advised by the dean of the business school, and join a close-knit Scholars community.”

    • Write/speak about what you will specifically achieve from this community/this opportunity. What will you do with the backing and support of a faculty mentor/scholar community? Why do you want to join the community but also what will you give back?

Merit based scholarships can be a great way of finding support for your education - as well as provide you with access to a great community!
