How to Start Writing Your Personal Statement

Continuing on our series of articles regarding college applications, this week we will be talking about writing the Common Application personal statement. Writing a personal statement can feel overwhelming, but breaking it down into steps can make the process manageable and even enjoyable. A personal statement is an opportunity to showcase your unique experiences, motivations, and goals. Here’s how to get started:

1. Reflect on Your Experiences and Goals

Before writing, take time to reflect. Consider what has shaped you as an individual. What are the key experiences, challenges, or achievements that have influenced your academic or career choices? Writing these down on a piece of paper can help you narrow it down! Remember, admissions committees are looking for insight into your personal journey—what makes you stand out?

2. Understand the Prompt

The Common App gives you several options for a prompt, plus one “choose your own prompt” option. Take advantage of this! Keep in mind that the statement should reflect who you are beyond grades and test scores.

3. Create an Outline

Once you've gathered ideas, create an outline. This will help organize your thoughts and ensure a logical flow. Start with an engaging introduction that grabs attention, followed by paragraphs that delve into your experiences, skills, and aspirations. Conclude with a reflection on how these experiences have prepared you for the next step in your journey.

4. Write the First Draft

Now that you have an outline, start writing. Don’t worry about making it perfect on the first try. Focus on getting your thoughts down. The goal of the first draft is to translate your outline into sentences and paragraphs.

5. Revise and Polish

Once the draft is complete, revise for clarity, structure, and tone. Seek feedback from teachers or friends to refine it. Remember that Redwood River Academy is here to help! Our staff have all written a personal statement, and are more than happy to weigh in.

By breaking the process into smaller steps, writing your personal statement becomes less daunting and more empowering. Ultimately, you are not stuck with your first idea! Give yourself flexibility, and see what makes the most sense for you and your application.
